CONSTRUCTION BUSINESS - IN CANADA ONLY

For Professionals Transitioning into the Construction Industry

Starting a construction business in Canada begins with a solid understanding of construction practices, effective marketing, accurate estimating, managing subcontractors, and overseeing daily operations. Once these foundations are in place, you must register your business, obtain the required licenses and insurance, and comply with local building codes and safety regulations. 

MODULES

The program includes both online and in-person training. Online modules are self-paced, while in-person training sessions are scheduled based on your availability 

Module 1: Understanding Construction Business Models

Explore the major types of construction businesses: general contracting, custom home building, renovations, design-build firms, project management companies, and trade-specific businesses (drywall, electrical, HVAC, etc.). Compare startup requirements, licensing needs, profit margins, and operational risks to determine which model aligns best with your experience and goals. 

Module 2: Introduction to the Canadian Construction Industry

 Gain an overview of the construction industry in Canada, including regulatory bodies, demand drivers, and economic trends. Understand regional differences and the role of construction in housing, infrastructure, and commercial development. 

Module 3: Construction Methods & Canadian Building Codes

 Learn common residential and commercial construction systems and materials. Develop working knowledge of national and provincial building codes that apply to business owners and contractors. 

Module 4: Reading Construction Drawings & Specification

Interpret architectural and structural drawings, site plans, and specifications. Learn how to use drawings to scope work, estimate, and supervise construction activities. 

Module 5: Estimating & Job Costing

Master quantity take-offs, supplier pricing, and budget forecasting. Build your ability to create competitive, profitable estimates and control project costs.  

Module 6: Construction Scheduling & Subcontractor Management

Use project management tools like Gantt charts, CPM, and look-ahead schedules. Learn how to plan timelines, assign trades, manage delays, and keep projects on track. 

Module 7: Health, Safety & WSIB Compliance

Understand Occupational Health & Safety (OHSA) requirements for employers. Learn how to register with WSIB, manage safety protocols, and minimize jobsite risks.  

Module 8: Permits, Inspections & Municipal Processes

Get step-by-step instruction on applying for building permits, dealing with inspectors, and complying with local zoning and bylaw regulations.  

Module 9: Contracts, Client Relations & Dispute Resolution

Learn how to draft construction contracts, manage change orders, and deal with difficult clients. Gain skills in negotiation, documentation, and dispute avoidance. 

Module 10: Setting Up a Construction Business in Canada

Walk through the business setup process including incorporation, business name registration, insurance, bonding, and licensing. Learn how to set up bookkeeping, software tools, and hiring systems. 

Module 11: Digital Marketing & Lead Generation for Contractors

Build a strategy for branding, building a website, using social media, and generating leads. Learn how to sell renovation or construction services effectively to residential or commercial clients. 

Module 12: Hands-On Practical Project Visit

Get field experience on a supervised mock construction site. Practice project walkthroughs, quality control, communication with trades, and site coordination. 

Final Assessment

At the end of the program, participants will complete a comprehensive Final Assessment that evaluates technical knowledge and business planning skills. The assessment includes an exam covering core construction and regulatory topics, along with a Capstone Business Project where each participant will draft a complete construction business plan. Upon successful completion, participants will receive Construction Business Owner Certificate.
